The allure of chasing the powerful cobia beckons anglers from all over, and Crystal River's waters serve as one of the best arenas for this sporting pursuit.
May & June are the best months
Two main ways to catch cobia is the bait and wait technique or running and gunning looking for fish. Typically around buoys, poles, reefs and wrecks. Both are quite effective in our area.
6-7 Hours (20 miles max)
8 Hours (40 miles max)
The right gear is crucial in cobia fishing. Due to their size and strength, a medium to heavy action rod with a reel capable of holding plenty of lines is recommended. When it comes to line, a braided line with a heavy 80 to 100lb leader will stand up to the cobia's rough handling. As for bait, live pinfish, eels, and crab are particularly enticing, but artificial lures can also yield results.
